By Chris Williams: WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao claims he’s ready to face Timothy Bradley this Saturday night in Las Vegas in their pay-per-view mega fight to be shown on HBO.
Pacquiao said to philboxing.com “I’m ready…To tell you honestly, I haven’t felt this good in the past several cames we had before.” You know what this means, don’t you? It means that if Pacquiao starts making excuses after the fight for his poor performance than you can read it for what it is – Pacquiao working on damage control.
He’s saying now he’s ready and in tip top shape then there can’t be anymore excuses if things go wrong again for him. I just want to hear him give Bradley credit if he gets whipped by him in this fight. I don’t want to see Pacquiao, and his wife Jinkee and trainer Freddie Roach talking about how Pacquiao had family problems that kept him from being 100%. If he loses this fight, he lost it because Bradley was simply too talented and Pacquiao had lost a step.
I’ll give him that excuse. He can say he’s getting old, because that’s something you can actually believe. I don’t believe an excuse about him being not ready because of family problems, because we heard last time that Pacquiao was having one of the best training camps of his life before his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez last November. And what did we see? We saw Pacquiao struggle badly and win a controversial decision.
By Chris Williams: If trainer Freddie Roach gets his way, he’s going to have strength and conditioning trainer Alex Ariza not part of his four-man corner this Saturday night in Manny Pacquiao’s bout against Tim Bradley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Roach said this about Ariza on last Saturday’s Pacquiao-Bradley 24/7 episode 3 on HBO:
“Alex will be in until the fight, and then we will gt to the fight I put down my four cornerman, he won;t be on the list. I said some things on 24/7 last night that Alex maybe might not like. If he has something to say to me about it, he’ll say it, but I wont let it affect my fighter. I know what’s important here and that’s the focus of Manny Pacquiao. Manny likes him and wants him on board, so that’s the way it is. That’s the way we gotta leave it for now.”
I think Ariza is needed in the corner during the fights, because I think it’s difficult to understand what Roach is saying half the time because of his speech problems. At least Ariza can clearly be understood and he’s good at motivating Pacquiao. He obviously doesn’t know as much about boxing as Roach, but the things Ariza says to Pacquiao is useful.
It looks like Roach is trying to marginalize Ariza’s role with Pacquiao. If Ariza is smart, he’ll talk to Pacquiao, the guy that’s calling the shots and paying the bills, and he may be able to veto what Roach is talking about. I don’t think it’s Roach’s place to dismiss someone from Pacquiao’s corner if Pacquiao is the one paying for his services. I think Roach is going a little overboard here. If Pacquiao is still happy with Ariza, then he’s got to accept that and not try and keep Ariza out of the picture.
Earlier in the same episode, Roach had an additional strength trainer with Pacquiao as well side by side with Ariza. It’s a weird situation to say the last. Ariza needs to speak up to Pacquiao, because this can’t be a good thing to have someone getting in the way of his job when he’s trying to work with Pacquiao.
Roach apparently isn’t happy with Ariza for some of the things he’s said, as well because of his decision to leave the Pacquiao camp early while the Filipino fighter was training in the Philippines to get ready for the Bradley fight. Ariza left early to fly to the U.S to assist another Top Rank/Roach fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. with his conditioning for his upcoming bout against Andy Lee on June 16th.
Pacquiao/Bradley 24/7 on HBO, trainer Freddie Roach went about motivating his fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in a simplistic manner using odd comparisons and faulty reasoning.
Roach believes that because Tim Bradley has muscles, he’s therefore going to be slow and beatable for Pacquiao.
Here’s what Roach said “He [Bradley] has all that muscle. No problem. With a lot of muscle, he’s going to be very slow. [Ricky] Hatton had good muscles; [Shane] Mosley had good muscles too. [Miguel] Cotto had good muscles.”
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anything more stupid than Roach’s argument to try and motivate Pacquiao. If Roach really wanted to be technical about it, he might as well have mentioned Pacquiao as well, because he’s actually has more muscle than Hatton, Cotto and Bradley. If that’s criteria for someone being slow and beatable, then Roach would have to eliminate fighters like Sergio Martinez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Andre Ward, and Wladimir Klitschko, because they all have a lot of muscle.
Roach is really reaching in trying to motivate Pacquiao. Bradley may have some muscle, but he’s hardly slow and he’s not like Hatton or the sparring partner Ruslan Provodnikov that Roach hired because he believes that his style is identical to Bradley. I’ve never seen a more different fighter in my life, and it worries me that Roach is seeing things in such a twisted manner. It suggests that he’s over-simplifying things in his head. Hopefully, Pacquiao isn’t gullible enough to buy the stuff Roach is trying to sell to him because if he goes into the Bradley fight on Saturday assuming he’s going to be slow, he’s going to be in for a rude awakening when he starts getting lit up. I wonder what Roach will say at that point? I can imagine Roach saying to a bloody and battered Pacquiao, ‘See, I told you Bradley was slow.’
